FORECASTING SYSTEM FOR CIRCULATION OF THE TYRRHENIAN SEA

Innovations and Benefits

The marine circulation and sea state forecast models  are powerful tools to support the management of the marine environment and the planning for the sustainable development of the economic activity that is related to it. In the last decade ENEA, alongside consolidated oceanographic climate modeling activities, has developed operational forecasting systems for circulation and sea state. These include the TYREM model, operational since 2009, which provides forecasts of circulation of the Tyrrhenian sea with sufficient spatial detail (about 2 km) to resolve even small scale processes in the coastal regions.
TYREM is part of a national operational network covering the main italian seas. ENEA has also developed a wave forecasting system, covering the entire Mediterranean sea, and with more spatial detail some sub-basins which are nested with the basin scale model. These activities have made it possible to build a climatology of the energy potential of the wave motion in the main italian seas.

Use

TYREM has been used not only for scientific purpose, but also for oil-spill activities, save and rescue operations, and for management of emergencies such as the one regarding COSTA CONCORDIA. Wave forecasting systems are currently supporting activities to test wave and current extraction devices.
