Innovations and Benefits
Development of an integrated approach based on atmospheric dispersion modelling, advanced technologies for air pollutant measurement, environmental epidemiology and health risk assessment for impact analysis and environmental remediation action planning. In particular: a) development of source apportionment techniques to identify the most relevant problems and sources of pollution; b) development of GIS-based methods to estimate population exposure; c) spatial and temporal evaluation of population health status by cause-specific mortality data through an epidemiological database at municipal level; d) application of risk assessment methodologies for carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects in relation to specific air pollutant concentrations.
Use
Consultancy to energy production companies, industrial plant operators, and Regional Agencies for Environmental and Health Protection, for air quality assessment and recovery action planning.
Applications and ongoing Activities
Application of health risk assessment methodologies for air quality evaluation in geographical areas with industrial plants. Inhalation cancer risk and hazard maps have been created for specific pollutants and target organs of toxicity. ENEA holds an epidemiological database containing municipality-based, cause-specific mortality data all over the national territory, registered and coded by the National Institute of Statistics for the period 1969-2011, regularly updated International Disease Classification codes, and decennial census population data between 1961 and 2011.
