Innovations and Benefits

ENEA is leader in the study of multicolor X-ray techniques. The new C-MOS detectors (in the 2-100 Kev range) can discriminate the colors of the X-ray spectrum. This much increases the capability to study materials.
3-D multicolor X-ray microtomography can be used for analysis of mechanical or biomedical micro-devices, biological samples or quality control for processes involving different materials (deposits, adhesions, implantations, etc.). It can be important when studying small-sized (cm.) samples, very structured or made of different materials.
2-D multicolor scanning X-ray radiography for studying materials. It can be used when studying plastics, ceramics, gels, foams, carbon materials or composites, even large-sized.

Use

Applications to mechanic, automotive, aeronautical, chemical industries, civil security.

Applications and ongoing Activities

Activities are underway to develop this technology, which has a great potential to be tested by actual applications. Specifically, a patent has been registered (RM2015A000071) which makes use of X rays to discriminate  black plastic wastes to be correctly selected for recycling purposes.
