Innovations and Benefits

Development activities of cereal and legume varieties to be mainly used as alternative food and protein sources. ENEA, within this sector of activity, has recently registered and patented two new varieties of Triticale ("Quirinale '') and of Lupino (" Polo ''). The special feature of the Triticale Quirinale variety is that its yield is higher compared to other varieties and the resistance to cold and to the main diseases is stronger. The Lupine "Polo" variety is characterized by high productivity (10% more grain yield and green mass), good resistance to cold and to the main diseases and functional features for large-scale use in the feed industry, partially replacing the soy beans.

Use

Improvement of agricultural and feed productions and higher income from the marketing of new varieties. The "Quirinale" Triticale variety turns out to be useful for the different production needs: from the grain to the silage, to the biomass for energy use. The Lupino "Polo" variety can be directly used as a protein pasture, ie for the composition of zootechnical feeds.

Applications and ongoing Activities

Development of new varieties in association with the seed and feed industry, generally co-owners and users of the patents obtained.
