ENEA Technology

PRODUCTION OF HEAT, STEAM AND ELECTRICITY BY SOLAR THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE

Technology Readiness Level (TRL)

8

Innovations and Benefits

ENEA has developed a molten-salt concentrating solar technology with storage capability (and possible biomass integration) aimed at replacing fossil fuels and reducing the environmental impact.
"Prova Collettori Solari" is a testbed for small sized molten salt high temperature plants, providing  a monolithic thermal storage tank with integrated steam generator.
This new approach cuts down set-up and maintenance costs, while raising the overall  operating efficiency for plants in the power range of few MW.
A market ready demonstration plant (with 1 MWe power) is being built at "Borg El Arab" near  Alexandria, Egypt, in the framework of the MATS EU Project. It will constitute a reference for the diffusion of small scale electric thermodynamic solar plants in the Mediterranean area.

Use

Electric power and/or steam/process heat production up to 550 °C, for facilities with size from hundreds of kW to tens of MW.

Applications and ongoing Activities

A number of activities are underway (research, development and qualification of components, prototype testing, design and development of different-sized facilities), in the framework of national and international collaborations. At the national level, mention deserve Kinetics Technologies S.p.A., Soltigua, Enerray, Archimede Solar Energy s.r.l.
