ROMEO: PLANT FOR THE TEST OF HYDROMETALLURGICAL PROCESSES FOR THE RECOVERY OF MATERIALS

Technology Readiness Level (TRL)

6

Innovations and Benefits

ROMEO (Recovery Of MEtals by hydrOmetallurgy), a demonstration plant built in the "Casaccia Research Centre" is dedicated to the recovery and separation of materials from complex matrices through hydrometallurgical technologies.
A section of the plant is totally designed and dedicated to the recovery of precious metal from printed circuit boards (process under patent n. RM2015A000064).
The plant is designed to accommodate different functional modules: according to the process to be set up, the available equipment items are interconnected and assembled to obtain the desired result (pumps, filters, dissolvers, tanks etc…).

Use

The plant was designed and realized in order to test in pilot-scale the performance of hydrometallurgical processes previously defined in laboratory-scale.
The operation of this plant allows to obtain the necessary information for the transfer in industrial scale of the processes from an operational, technical and economical point of view, of the risk assessment and the benefits for the society and the environment.

Applications and ongoing Activities

Experimentation campaigns on the hydrometallurgical process dedicated to the recovery of material (Au, Ag, Sn, Cu, Pd, Fe and Pb) from printed circuit boards (patent application with international extension PCTIB2014065131).
