SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF INDUSTRIAL AREAS
Innovations and Benefits
The approach suggested by the Industrial Ecology offers a valid possibility to achieve sustainability objectives in the industrial field, moving on from the traditional linear approach to production and contributing to "closing the loop" of material and energy lifecycles. The Legislative Decree N. 112/98 (Bassanini), which has introduced the idea of “Ecologically Equipped Area”, favored the transformation of the Industrial Areas into an opportunity to support the environmental protection, the enhancement of territory and the entrepreneurial competitiveness.
Use
The activities carried out by the RISE Laboratory had the objective of identifying innovative tools and methods to reduce environmental impact and promote the development of Industrial Areas, fostering the development of a collaborative climate between local authorities, enterprises and citizens:
- a shared management model for the planning and management of Sustainable Industrial Areas, to be used as support tool by managers of Industrial Areas and Local Authorities:
- a database of good practices of infrastructures and Area services;
- a self-assessment checklist on the positioning of the Industrial Area in the initial phase of the pathway;
- a guideline for industrial eco-efficient buildings;
- a software application for the assessment of CO2 emissions from Industrial Areas waste;
- a checklist for the development of an innovative logistics system for people and goods.
Applications and ongoing Activities
RISE has co-ordinated and participated in various European projects:
- MEID, Mediterranean Eco-Industrial Development;
- MER, Marketing and GovERning Innovative Industrial Areas;
- ECO-SCP-MED, Integrating Experiences and Recommendations in Eco-Innovation for Sustainable Production and Consumption in the Mediterranean Area;
- SIAM, Sustainable Industrial Area Model.
