THERMOMECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF MATERIALS AND COMPONENTS UNDER RELEVANT CONDITIONS FOR IV GENERATION FUSION AND FISSION REACTORS

Innovations and Benefits

ENEA is able to carry out, in compliance with regulations, the investigations necessary for the characterization of the materials used in nuclear and civil systems. It analyzes, understands and interprets the behavior of structural materials and protective coatings in the presence of high temperature process fluids. It proposes and conducts research aimed at understanding the mechanisms of degradation of the thermo-mechanical properties of structural materials. It participates in international projects and research groups. It performs measurements and laboratory tests.

Use

Thermomechanical qualification of materials and mechanical tests of components and materials. Equipment used, available and reference tests:

- SERVODRAULIC PRESS MTS 810 "ZELDA":
• maximum operating pressure 200bar; maximum load: 100 kN
• Test of LCF, HCF and Creep-Fatigue at high temperature (ASTM E 2714-09)

- SERVODRAULIC PRESS MTS 810 "Gilda":
• maximum operating pressure: 200 bar; maximum load: 100 kN
• Test of LCF, HCF and Creep-Fatigue at high temperature (ASTM E 2714-09); Fretting test in Pb at 550 ° C, dynamic friction and first release under vacuum and at cryogenic temperature

- ELECTROMECHANICAL PRESS METROCOM E5:
• Tensile test (ASTM E8 / E8M-11; ASTM E21-09; EN ISO 6892-1); bending test at 3 or 4 points; arbitrary cycles; maximum load: 50 kN

- "GIUNONE" SERVO HYDRAULIC PRESS:
• Maximum operating pressure: 200 bar; maximum load in compression: 9 MN; Maximum frequency: 0.1 Hz; Type of test: Compression tests

- SERVO HYDRAULIC PRESS MTS 810 "MANOLA":
• Maximum operating pressure: 200 bar; maximum load: 500 kN; First release friction tests at cryogenic temperature

Applications and ongoing Activities

The laboratory of FSN - ING mechanical tests has been carrying out, for decades, qualification tests on prototype components for fourth generation nuclear reactors and fusion reactors, characterization of the mechanical properties of metal alloys, characterization and verification of structural elements for civil works.
