THIN AND NANOSTRUCTURED FILMS FOR ENERGY APPLICATIONS

Technology Readiness Level (TRL)

4

Innovations and Benefits

Realization of innovative thin film and nanostructured materials through the use of different PVD - physical vapor deposition techniques (DC sputtering, pulsed DC sputtering, RF sputtering, thermal evaporation, electron beam evaporation, etc.) and ALD - atomic layer deposition, for applications in the field of conversion and exploitation of solar and thermal energy. In particular, what is proposed regards: the development of materials for photovoltaics, solar thermal, production of hydrogen from water, recovery of waste heat (in industrial processes, in the context of consumer electronics and / or in the field of solar applications), and the related support actions in terms of feasibility analysis and functional characterizations.

Use

Photovoltaic applications.
Solar thermal.
Water splitting for the exploitation of solar energy for the production of hydrogen from water.
Thermoelectric devices for recovering waste heat.

Applications and ongoing Activities

Development of innovative materials for the conversion of solar energy in the framework of research projects (eg PON02 "INNOVASOL") and establishment of a laboratory for the thermoelectric characterization of materials (Network of public research laboratories Puglia "ZERO"). Characterizations of materials for energy conversion, e.g. morphological, compositional, structural, Raman spectroscopy on nanostructures for third generation solar cells, spectrophotometry and IR spectroscopy of materials for energy conversion (Network of public research laboratories Puglia "PHASHYN", PON03 infrastructure "TEDAT").
