ENEA Technology

VOLUMETRIC PUMPS WITH CONSTANT FLOWRATE FOR REVERSE OSMOSIS APPLICATIONS

Technology Readiness Level (TRL)

7

Innovations and Benefits

ENEA in collaboration with an external inventor, is going to develope a special kind of piston pump which, thanks to a desmodromic movement, permits to achieve constant flowrates avoiding pneumatic dampeners and also the usual launch pump.

Use

Reverse Osmosis plants, Water Treatment, High Pressure applications.

Applications and ongoing Activities

The volumetric pumps with constant flowrate developed by ENEA, are realized starting from external Patents (ITRM20030483 (A1) 2005-04-21 ; ITRM20080397 (A1) 2010-01-23), which adopt “Triplex” or even with more pistons schemes, moved by desmodromic cams (ATEX standard) with original profile, in order to eliminate pulsations on either delivery or suction pipes.
A specific design of the suction valves, allows in many cases to avoid also the need of the additional launch pumps, normally adopted in common reverse osmosis applications.
The measured volumetric (~90%) and energetic (~80%) efficiencies, are in line with the best current manufacturers.
A demonstration prototype, rated 2200 liters/hour at 60 Bar is available for viewing near the laboratories of the ENEA’s Casaccia centre.
The development of a special energy recuperator to lower the typical high electricity consumptions of reverse osmosis applications is ongoing.
