SUSTAINABLE PV SYSTEM FOR DRINKING WATER SUPPLY IN THE RURAL AREAS OF SOMALI AND AFAR REGIONAL STATES OF ETHIOPIA

Clean water sanitarion - Affordable and clean energy - Climate action

For achieving the objectives

Agenda 2030

The Italian Ministry for the Environment, Land and Sea has funded a project for climate change mitigation and adaptation under the Italy-Ethiopia MoU. The project provides for the production of photovoltaic and water storage systems serving wells currently equipped with diesel generators, used for drinking water supply for human and farming use.  The project interventions cover the Afar and Somali State Regions in 22 village, each with an average population of 2000 inhabitants. The intervention will prevent 395 tons CO2/year emissions to be released in the air. The results of this pilot experience will be used to implement these technologies under a larger national project that will likely interest 1300 villages, with a view to a more cost-effective and low GHG emissions management..
