Food safety: METROFOOD project among the EU strategic research infrastructures

For the first time, an Italian-led research infrastructure has been selected among the excellence in the "Health & Food" sector of the European Strategic Forum for the Research Infrastructures roadmap (ESFRI - European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures). It’s METROFOOD-RI, an ENEA-coordinated project involving over 2200 researchers from 48 of the major institutions in 18 European countries dealing with food safety, quality and traceability and the fight against sophistication and counterfeiting.

Security: In Italy first European center for the critical infrastructure protection

The first center in Europe for the security of strategic infrastructures is born today in our country, thanks to the agreement signed in Rome by the President of ENEA Federico Testa and the President of the INGV Carlo Doglioni. Called EISAC Italy (European Infrastructure Simulation and Analysis Centre), it‘s the first of four centers to be set in the European Union [1] to support infrastructure operators and the Public Administration to provide continuity to essential services such as electricity and water supply, communications and transport in case of blackouts, terrorist actions, cyber attacks and extreme weather events.

Fusion research: SOFT 2018 in Italy, record edition for the 30th Symposium on Fusion Technology organized by ENEA

Great success for the 30th Symposium on Fusion Technology (SOFT 2018), one of the most important international conferences in the field of fusion energy research, organized by ENEA in Italy. The event brought together over 1,000 scientists, engineers and exhibitors from all over the world and focused on the latest developments on fusion experiments and activities. The protagonist of SOFT 2018 was also the industry, with over 30 stands, 60 exhibitors and a hundred participants in the Industry Day, the information day dedicated to the opportunities provided to companies by major international projects, such as ITER and the great fusion research hub DTT (Divertor Tokamak Test)

Researchers' Night 2018: Italy, the initiatives organized by ENEA

More than doubled this year the ENEA's at the second edition of the Open Research Day on Friday 28th September. 5 research centers will open doors from 2.00 pm to 11.30 pm, (Portici, Trisaia, Brindisi, Casaccia, and Frascati) in the event that allows everyone to meet researchers in their laboratories. Through events, exhibitions, tours, live experiments and games, it will be possible to enter the world of science and technological innovation, led by scientists, researchers and technicians in a real "journey" among the Italian excellences.

Science: At the start "ScienzaInsieme", the Italian alliance for science communication

"ScienzaInsieme", the first Italian scientific dissemination initiative, has officially been launched. The main Italian research institutions - ASI, CINECA, CNR, ENEA, INAF, INFN, INGV, ISPRA, Sapienza University fo Rome and Tuscia University of Viterbo will work together with the aim of promoting a kind of communication that combines scientific rigor and knowledge sharing. Cooperation: Italy-China Science, Technology and Innovation Week 2018

ENEA will participate in the Italy-China Science, Technology and Innovation Week. Promoted in Italy by the Ministry of Education, University and Research-MIUR in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation-MAECI, the initiative is coordinated by Città della Scienza in Naples, with collaboration by the National Research Council-CNR, Confindustria, the National Technology Clusters and the Italian research centers. The Italy-China Science, Technology and Innovation Week is planned in December this year to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the signature of the first intergovernmental agreement between the two countries.

METROFOOD-RI, Infrastructure for Promoting Metrology in Food and Nutrition coordinated by ENEA, is one of the six new projects selected by ESFRI for the strategic potential and impact for strengthening European research, included in the new ESFRI Roadmap 2018. METROFOOD-RI aims at providing high quality metrology services in food and nutrition by proposing a distributed Research Infrastructure and filling a gap in the Health&Food domain.

Energy: Consumption + 3%, renewables + 2% in Italy

In the first quarter of 2018 final energy consumption in Italy increased by 3% compared to the same period in 2017, with the civil sector recording the highest increase (+ 4.5%). In terms of energy sources, renewables returned to grow (+ 2%) thanks to the recovery in hydroelectric generation (+ 11%). This is what emerges from the ENEA quarterly analysis of the Italian energy system which highlights a rising trend in energy consumption in industry (+ 2%, in line with industrial production) and unchanged levels in transport despite growing traffic indicators.

Eni and ENEA launch a joint scientific research and technology partnership

Eni and ENEA have signed a partnership to start research in strategic scientific and technological areas which have considerable potential impact for the Country, including circular economy, renewable energy sources, decarbonisation, and environmental protection. ENEA “Microcosm” at the Giffoni Film Festival 2018

ENEA presents the first "Microcosm" for growing plants indoors and in extreme environments at the 48th Giffoni Film Festival. The presentation will take place on July 25th during the Green Masterclass of the well-known international film festival for young people (also known since 2009 as the Giffoni Experience), which takes place from July 20-28 at Giffoni Valle Piana, in the Salerno province. Dedicated to the environment, new technologies, recycling and energy saving, the Green Masterclass, which will also be attended by the President of ENEA Federico Testa, provides for the participation of young people aged 18 to 25 years.

ENEA's 2017 Annual Report on Energy Efficiency and investments representing 3,7 billion (so-called ecobonus)

Thanks to the so-called ecobonus, Italian families have invested over 3.7 billion euro in 2017 achieving about 420 thousand energy requalification measures, saving over 1,300 GWh / year. Furthermore, about 2 million tons of oil equivalent (Mtep) was saved from the emission of 5.8 million Energy Savings Certificates, the so-called White Certificates, of which 62% in the industry and 31% in the civil sector.

Biotechnology: Italy patents method for producing saffron, world's most expensive spice

ENEA has patented an innovative and low-cost biotechnological process for producing crocins, the red pigments of saffron flowers, in large quantities and with high levels of purity. Used historically as dyes for painting and as food ingredients, crocins also have antioxidant properties and protective functions against some degenerative diseases of the retina and certain types of cancer.
