21/6/2018

The Union for Mediterranean Secretariat hosted in Barcelona the launching ceremony of the project meetMED, aiming at increasing energy efficiency and renewable sources in the energy mix of the Euro-Mediterranean area by 2040.

The  meetMED, aims to facilitate the energy transition in the Euro-Mediterranean region through a significant increase of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency in the energy mix of the Mediterranean.

Funded by the European Commission with 1.6 million for a duration of 2 years, the project meetMED (Mitigation Enabling Energy Transition in the Mediterranean Region) counts as its partner the association MEDENER of the national agencies of the Mediterranean Countries for renewable energies and energy efficiency, and the Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), based in Cairo.

ENEA, a founding partner of MEDENER, acts as Presidency of the Association until 2020. The role of ENEA in the project is to conduct technical-scientific, training and communication activities, both in the energy and environmental fields, and to carry out studies and market analysis.

Dario Chello, Head of the ENEA European Union and International Organisms Service, pointed out: "Italy is strongly committed to multilateral international cooperation in the Euro-Mediterranean region and proactively protects two of the three thematic Platforms which implement the Union process for the Mediterranean of Barcelona, that of the extended electricity market (TERNA) and that of renewable energy and energy efficiency (ENEA). Our participation in the meetMED project shall be considered  as a  first step on a difficult but realistic path towards an energy transition in the region".

"As a founding member of MEDENER, ENEA has in meetMED a further opportunity to valorise its skills and consolidate for Italy a key role in the path to sustainability", Anna M. Sàlama of the ENEA Energy Efficiency Unit Department, said.
