The event, attended by over 650 delegates from 65 different nationalities, took place in Rome on 10 and 11 December. On the spotlight the new technology roadmap that will drive future investments in energy research and innovation

The SET Plan Conference 2014, that took place in Rome on 10 and 11 December last, has marked a step ahead towards the energy union. The annual European forum on the Strategic Energy Technologies Plan, this year organized by ENEA within the Italian Presidency of the European Union, has gathered over 650 leading experts and decision makers from all over Europe and abroad, on the topical issue of the transition of the energy system towards a low carbon economy.

Launched in 2008, the SET Plan is the technology pillar of European energy and climate policy, supporting research and innovation. The Italian appointment was awaited by the energy community as the occasion to deepen the features of the Integrated Roadmap, the new technology framework for research and innovation in the energy field that will drive future investments, so to make Europe a world-class leader in clean and sustainable energy technologies.

In the two-day meeting, the debate over the development and deployment of new energy technologies has been inspired by th

e manifold speeches delivered in the Conference main sessions and in the 6 side events. Interventions focused undergoing policies and technological options aimed at both ensuring energy security and tackling global warming, reinforcing European commitment to drastically curb CO2 emissions by 2050.

Renewables, clean fossil fuels, carbon capture and sequestration, smart grids and, energy efficiency and the new focus on consumer behaviour have been identified as key technology. ENEA has represented Italy as European best practice on energy efficiency illustrating the “white certificates” instrument, meant to support the introduction of more efficient technologies in the industry and service sectors.

Important acknowledgements of ENEA excellency in research and innovation also from the Poster Session. The Coal hydro-gasification and renewable energies for SNG production and the KiloWàttene project on energy efficiency have been awarded the third and second prize of the Best Poster Award assigned by the Steering Committee.
