At ENEA a study day on security technologies for the Italian Defense Higher Studies Institute

22/3/2018

At the ENEA Frascati research center a study day has recently taken place, organized for the Italian Defense Higher Studies Institute (IASD). Now at its third edition, the study day was intended for Italian and foreign senior officer, and public and private executives belonging to the 69th training course organized by IASD.

Course participants were accompanied by Brigadier General Davide Angrisani and welcomed by Dr. Aldo Pizzuto, who briefly illustrated ENEA's competences, focusing mostly on the activities of the ENEA Frascati Research Center and the Department for Fusion and Technology for Nuclear Safety and Security.

Dr. Palucci, head of the Diagnostics and Metrology Laboratory, presented ENEA’s security technologies and latest projects –some also funded by NATO and the European Commission– on “physical protection” of critical infrastructures against natural events; detection of biological and chemical agents dangerous for health and the food chain; prevention against terrorist attacks (e.g., explosive trace detection).

A second address was given by Dr. Luigi De Dominicis, researcher at the Diagnostics and Metrology Laboratory, and was entirely dedicated to EDEN: with 36 million euro funding, this is the largest EU-funded project ever on security, involving 36 partners among leading security experts from 15 EU Countries.

Great interest was raised by the practical demonstration of Laser scanning technology applications to cultural heritage conservation and to forensic activities: the demonstration gave rise to a lively and stimulating debate between ENEA researchers and officers belonging to police forces on the future possible uses of laser scanning during investigations.

The study day ended with a visit to the Technology Hall of the Fusion Division and to the Tokamak plant, which both Italian and foreign officials found very interesting.
