Burkina Faso, food safety project gets started

22/3/2018

A new project, RASAD– Food Safety Purchasing Networks supported by Italy’s Burkinabe Diaspora– has been started up. ENEA provides TAMAT – the project’s leading NGO– with its scientific and technical support for developing and validating sustainable farming production techniques.

Some of these have been experimented in the Ouagadougou region in collaboration with INERA (Istitut de l’Environnement et Recherches  Agricoles du Burkina Faso) to increase soil fertility through the so-called “butte-sandwich” technique and diffuse the implementation of phytosanitary defence measures using phytopesticides that can be easily purchased by local farmers. Funded by the Italian Development Cooperation Agency, the project also provides for Burkinabe farmers’ training on sustainable management of the different vegetables farming phases,  and for several initiatives dedicated to women.

Some of these are related to managing a centre for storing and marketing cereals and legumes in Ouagadougou outskirts, managing a restaurant where typical Burkinabe dishes are prepared with agri-food from sustainable farming, accessing microcredit to expand or start up crafts and commercial activities.
