Climate: In Italy the first summit on climate change and sea level variations in the Mediterranean

The most recent studies on the sea level rise of the Mediterranean connected to climate change will be at the center of the first workshop on the topic in Italy. On this occasion new data over the Italian areas at risk of coastal flooding will be released (Rome, ENEA headquarters). In addition to the Ministry of the Environment, the main national professors and researchers working in Italy and overseas from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, ENEA, CNR, the National Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC) and several universities will take part in the event. "With this workshop we mainly intend to promote a multidisciplinary approach to the study of the sea-level rise of Mediterranean by linking oceanography, geology, geophysics and coastal science research", underlines Gianmaria Sannino, head of the ENEA laboratory of "Climatic modeling and impacts".

During the workshop, the researchers will discuss over historical data on sea level variations, tectonic deformation, management of coastal areas and the effect of melting ice on the sea circulation and on the elastic deformation of the Earth's crust. At the end of the two-day event there will be a round table coordinated by the journalist Donatella Bianchi, president of WWF Italia.
The event is promoted by the World Climate Research Program (WCRP - World Climate Research Program), the European Climate Research Alliance (ECRA) and the European Institute for Innovation and Technology (EIT Climate-KIC).
