EERA, the European Energy Research Alliance, a network of major European research institutes, has launched the Energy Efficiency Joint Programme to join forces with European Industry and cut down the energy demand of the sector, improving the efficiency of industrial processes. The initiative has three sub-programmes: the agro-industry sub-programme, which is coordinated by ENEA; one specially dedicated to the most energy-intensive sectors, coordinated by the Spanish CIRCE Foundation, based in Zaragoza, and finally another one to address manufacturing, coordinated by the Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation from Germany.
Energy efficiency is an essential tool to improve quality and give industry a competitive advantage and the EERA Joint Programme is specially aimed at furthering the adoption of necessary innovation among European enterprises, at least till the process can self-sustain. Focussing on agro-industry ENEA is to promote a number of initiatives to champion cooperation among professional operators, public institutions, consumerist associations, and above all researchers.
ENEA is founder partner and currently coordinator of the Secretariat of EERA, an alliance of more than 150 European public research centres and universities, based in Brussels. Since its foundation in 2011, EERA has developed a varied portfolio of Joint Research Programmes, all aimed at supporting the European Union energy strategy with research activities. Joint Programmes help research organisations find partner institutions in Europe, as well as outside the Union, to share not only projects and goals, but also the cost of research.
