ENEA “Microcosm” at the Giffoni Film Festival 2018

19/7/2018

ENEA presents the first "Microcosm" for growing plants indoors and in extreme environments at the 48th Giffoni Film Festival. The presentation will take place on July 25th during the Green Masterclass of the well-known international film festival for young people (also known since 2009 as the Giffoni Experience), which takes place from July 20-28 at Giffoni Valle Piana, in the Salerno province. Dedicated to the environment, new technologies, recycling and energy saving, the Green Masterclass, which will also be attended by the President of ENEA Federico Testa, provides for the participation of young people aged 18 to 25 years.

"ENEA has been invited to talk about the Microcosm, a real hi-tech field simulator developed for the first time in Italy by ENEA, in collaboration with the FOS Group, for the cultivation of plants like olive trees, potatoes, tomato, lettuce and basil, indoor and in extreme environments, using soil as a substratum", Luigi d'Aquino, researcher at the ENEA Portici Laboratory of Nanomaterials and Devices Laboratory, explained.

The Microcosmo fits well in this context, where the new recycling, energy saving and environmental protection technologies are being addressed, as it is a real ecosystem, different from traditional greenhouses and growth rooms, and capable of faithfully replicating in the laboratory what happens in a cultivated field under certain environmental conditions. This means being able to recreate an ecosystem in environments such as airports and subways but also desert or glacial areas ", d'Aquino concluded.

Since 2009, the Giffoni Film Festival has had 5 master classes where famous guests, such as Nobel Prizes Rita Levi Montalcini and Michail Gorbaciov did in the past, provide students with in depth and comparison overviews on issues ranging from art to culture to science and innovation. Every year, internationally renowned actors and distinguished guests from the scientific and cultural world participate in the event, whose winners are chosen by a jury of about 3 thousand young people aged between 3 and 18 from 50 countries around the world.
