Europe and energy security: discussing scenarios and strategies at ENEA

The first findings of the European Project MILESECURE-2050 presented in Rome

Security of energy supply is a core issue for both Europe and Italy, especially at this particular moment in time in which several major energy suppliers are involved in war scenarios.

The need for a common European policy on energy security is becoming increasingly urgent, while remaining one of the most difficult goals to attain, also in view of the fact that member countries have diverging views on the subject.

This is what emerged at the presentation of the first findings of the European Project MILESECURE - 2050, held at ENEA’s headquarters and attended by Italian and European researchers and experts.

The objective of MILESECURE – 2050, in which ENEA is taking part, is understanding energy trends and overcoming the obstacles to a reduction in fossil fuel consumption and an energy mix diversification, towards a “low carbon” society, to bolster Europe’s energy security.

ENEA’s expert Oscar Amerighi explains: ENEA’s purpose is to predict the necessary changes in European energy systems over the next thirthy years, to reconcile climate change objectives with energy supply security. It’s a crucial issue for an energy importing country like Italy, relying mainly on pipelines.”

“To meet the challenges of climate change and energy security, Europe needs to rethink its energy policies, redefining patterns of production and consumption” said Prof. Patrizia Lombardi, Head of InterUniversity Department of Regional and urban Studies and Planning, Politecnico di Torino and Università di Torino.
