Global Climate: ENEA – FEEM report to limit average global surface temperature increase

To contribute to the fight against global climate change, Italy has to thoroughly modify its energy system by the year 2050. These are the conclusions of the report Pathways to deep decarbonization in Italy, 2015, jointly authored by FEEM, Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei, and ENEA’s researchers.
In view of the Conference of the Parties (COP21) of the UN Convention on Climate Change, which will be held in Paris from the 30th of November to the 11th of December, the report is an essential tool for policy makers to understand which are the feasible pathways for Italy to achieve deep decarbonization.
On the downright reduction of carbon emissions in the atmosphere as a major measure to limit average global surface temperature increase to 2°C and mitigate the impacts of climate change triggered by human activities, international consensus has long been reached. But which is the best technological and infrastructural background for such a course to be accomplished in Italy? The report explores three alternative scenarios to 2050, which were elaborated with the TIMES-Italia model by ENEA, and assesses their macroeconomic impacts. In the concluding chapter, the focus is on necessary political choices to start the process and future technology developments.
The Italian report is part of a major international initiative, the Deep Decarbonization Pathways Project, fostered by Institut du Développement Durable et des Relations Internationales (IDDRI-SciencesPo) in Paris and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network of the United Nations (UN-SDSN), which is involving 16 research groups from as many different countries: Australia, Brazil , Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, United Kingdom, and the United States of America.
The general report, Pathway to Deep Decarbonization and the 16 associated country reports were presented to the international press last 14th of September in Paris. The Italian report will be presented in Rome next 26th of October in Rome, at ENEA’s headquarters.
