Innovation: ENEA to launch call for rapid virus test commercialization
10/12/2020
ENEA is to launch an exploratory survey, open to all companies, to commercialize a portable device performing highly-reliable, real-time tests (primarily to identify the pathogen responsible for Covid-19).
The instrument, the size of a smartphone, can be used for large-scale screening -ranging from schools to airports- is reusable and easy to use: it’s enough to blow into a tube, connected to the device, which has a highly sensitive and selective sensor based on a technique that does not need reagents or other materials.
"Given the pandemic emergency and in view of preventing future epidemics, we believe there are companies interested in collaborating with us in the commercialization of this device, which is low cost and can be effectively used in mass screening, also to detect the presence of pathogens other than Covid-19 ", Alessandro Coppola, Head of the ENEA Innovation and Development Department pointed out.
Developed at the ENEA Diagnostics and Metrology Laboratory in the Frascati Research Center, the rapid test device which can detect Covid-19 in breath, stems from the expertise gained in over twenty years dedicated to developing laser sensors for remote and local spectroscopic diagnostics and innovative diagnostic devices, also applicable in the biomedical field.
