Environment: ENEA launches Italy's air quality platform

'Air Quality Models Gateway' is the ENEA's platform on air quality in Italy. Developed at the "Atmospheric Pollution" and "Analysis and Protection of Critical Infrastructures" laboratories of ENEA, with the support of the Ministry of Ecological Transition as part of a collaboration agreement with ISPRA, the Higher Institute of Health and the Pollution Institute Atmospheric of the CNR, it has the aim of ensuring an effective implementation of the NEC Directive - National Emission Ceilings regarding the reduction of national emissions of some pollutants.

Innovation: ENEA designs alert system for critical infrastructures in the south

Guaranteeing safety of critical infrastructures of the South through static, seismic and environmental analysis and monitoring tools. This is the objective of the project RAFAEL, funded by the Ministry of University and Research with approximately 9 million euro, comprising ENEA as leader and other 18 partners including research bodies like INGV, universities and inter-university consortia (L'Aquila, Ferrara, Rome Biomedical Campus, CUEIM with the Universities of Salerno and Calabria, MEDISDIH Consortium with the Bari Polytechnic, CREO Consortium), major companies like Telecom, ANAS, E-Distribuzione, GORI Acqua, and innovative SMEs (Himet Srl, Ylichron Srl, G&A Engineering Srl, Geo-K Srl, NUVAP Srl, Tointech Srl).

Developing innovative models to collect and treatf organic waste in urban centers for an efficient and sustainable management also aimed at the creation of bioproducts with high added value. Antarctica: Italian science celebrates christmas 15,000 km from home

The PNRA, the National Research Program in Antarctica, funded by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR) managed by ENEA for logistics and CNR for scientific planning and coordination, will continue its activities during the end-of-year holidays. This year, about 140 researchers and technicians will spend Christmas over 15,000 km from home at the Mario Zucchelli (MZS), Concordia and Little Dome C bases, surrounded by the South Pole ice.

Innovation: More accurate and cost-effective diagnostics thanks to OLEDs and photonic crystals

Blood tests to identify infections using OLEDs (Organic Light Emitting Diode) and photonic crystals are the subject of a patent owned by ENEA (70%) and Fos SpA (30%), developed at the ENEA Nanomaterials and Devices Laboratory in Portici jointly with the Institute of Applied Sciences and Intelligent Systems of the CNR of Pozzuoli.

Antarctica: Beyond Epica exploring the climate of the past

The first ice core drilling campaign of Beyond Epica-Oldest Ice is starting at Little Dome C, in Antarctica. This international research project is funded by the European Commission with 11 million euros and it is coordinated by the Institute of Polar Sciences of the Cnr (National Research Council of Italy). The project aims to obtain information on the evolution of the temperatures and on the composition of the atmosphere 1.5 million years ago, by analysing the ice cores that will be extracted from the deep ice in Antarctica. These data will be invaluable for predicting future climate trends and for implementing mitigation strategies

Energy: innovative fuels from hydrogen and CO2 in a carbon-neutral production process

Producing innovative fuels to be used in the industrìal, transport and residential sectors, using carbon dioxide and green hydrogen in a carbon-neutral production process. It’s the objective of the project E-CO2, co-funded by the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Development and Cohesion Fund, coordinated by the ENEA Laboratory CROSS-TECin Bologna jointly with the universities of Bologna and Parma, the Energy and the Environment Laboratory of Piacenza, Romagna Tech and the companies of the Hera Group, Siram Veolia, Ecospray Technologies, Tper, Idro Meccanica and Buzzi Unicem.

Environment: Safe and sustainable cosmetics from plants, agricultural waste and plant cells

Food plants like ginger and basil, agricultural waste and plant cells to create clinically effective, safe, sustainable cosmetics. This is the goal of the project InnCoCells, funded by the EU Horizon 2020 program with 7.9 million euro, which involves 12 countries and 17 partners including ENEA and Arterra Bioscience for Italy and the Technical Research Center of Finland (VTT) as coordinator. The plants used to develop this new generation of cosmetics include turmeric, kencur, peony, cranberry, jasmine and licorice.

Innovation: ENEA develops "detoxified" gluten for celiacs and gluten intolerants

Thanks to a Proof of Concept (PoC) fund and a combination of skills which include immunology, protein engineering, biotechnology and biochemistry, a team of ENEA researchers at the Biotechnologies Laboratory has patented a process to produce "detoxified" gluten for celiacs and gluten intolerants with superior nutritional and organoleptic properties compared to gluten-free products currently on the market.

Antarctica: New season of the Concordia Station kicks off

The new summer campaign has begun at the Italian-French station of Concordia, with the arrival of the first technical crew on the Antarctic plateau, at over 3 thousand meters above sea level, as part of the expedition of the National Research Program in Antarctica (PNRA), funded by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR), managed by ENEA for logistic planning and organization and by the National Research Council (Cnr) for scientific planning and coordination.

Cultural heritage: 3D digital reconstruction brings back oldest pharmacy in Europe

Experiencing the charm, beauty and secrets of the oldest pharmacy in Europe through virtual reality. An international research team comprising Italy, Spain and Portugal succeded in building a 3D reconstruction of the apothecary of Santa Maria della Scala in Rome, a treasure chest dating back to the 16th century storing ancient drug recipes, substances from all continents and tools used to concoct potions and remedies employed to cure Popes, called the 'Pharmacy of the Popes'.

COP26: Italians worried about global climate change but not always well informed

Climate: ENEA in EU project for first coastal flood risk mapping

Creating the first European climate service to map coastal territories at risk of inundation in order to plan land use and secure the existing critical infrastructures. This is the goal of the EU project CoCLiCO (Coastal CLimate COre Services), funded by the Horizon 2020 program with about 6 million euro, comprising 18 partners - including ENEA- the only Italian research body participating, which has the task of preparing sea level rise flood maps for the entire Mediterranean and Black Sea area
