Environment: Over 80% of litter on Italian beaches is plastic

According to some ENEA studies, over 80% of waste on Italian beaches is made of plastic, a serious threat to the environment and man’s health. Under the Agency’s magnifying glass also microplastic pollutants which, because of their size inferior to 5mm, are not retained by waste water treatment facilities. Microplastic fragments, produced from degradation of plastic, account for 46% of beach litter, containing at least 100 million cotton buds.

Energy: First wind farm at Italian station in Antarctica

Wind is again the protagonist in Antarctica. Not only as a driving force of climate”, but as the engine of the first wind farm built at the Italian Mario Zucchelli Station in Terra Nova Bay, housing since 1985 the scientific laboratory of the PNRA, the National research program in Antarctica, funded by the MIUR, with the logistic implementation of ENEA and the scientific coordination of the CNR.

Fusion: The world’s more sophisticated magnet starts its journey to ITER

The largest and more sophisticated magnet in the world has left the ASG Superconductors factory based in north-western Italy. We’re talking record numbers both for the coil (TF Coils) which weighs 120 tonnes, is 9 meter wide and 16 meter high and the mean of transportation, a Self propelled truck, a 24-axied remote-controlled truck which took it to the harbour to get aboard the “Bremer Helena” the ship that will reach the port of Marghera, for the last manufacturing steps. After the casing phase is completed, the TF Coil (toroidal magnet) will head towards its final destination in Cadarache, France, site of the ITER project.

Mobility: Urb-e 4.0, the new hybrid city car by ENEA

Urb-e 4.0 has a battery recharged during stops by a very small 1kW fuel cell capable of generating electric energy thanks to the hydrogen contained in two 10 litres cylinders. Recharging takes no more than four hours and once empty the cylinders can be replaced at a gas station or an equipped area, making it possible to use an electric car even in absence of a garage and with long charging intervals.
