Environment: New Italian technologies for coastline mapping

Innovative remote observation technologies will make it possible to study beaches and sea beds to mitigate the effects of coastal erosion and improve tourist accomodation. These are the outcomes of a research conducted by a multidisciplinary team of ENEA, ISPRA, CNR and IUSS researchers on a stretch of the coast of the Circeo National Park between Latina and Sabaudia, Lazio. The studies, published in the international journal Remote Sensing are based on a new technique that combines remote sensing techniques with high resolution aerial sensors (LiDAR - Light Detection and Ranging) and in situ measurements for the calibration and verification of the acquired data.

Art: ENEA scientists unleash bacteria to clean Michelangelo's marbles

Three bacterial strains from the ENEA in-house collection have been used for the restoration of Michelangelo's masterpieces in the New Sacristy at the Medici Chapels in Florence. The bio-cleaning intervention, featured also on the front page of the New York Times, was conducted by an all-woman team of scientists and restorers deploying 'grime-eating bacteria” to remove centuries of dirt besmirching the funerary monuments of Lorenzo de 'Medici, Duke of Urbino and Giuliano de' Medici, Duke of Nemours.

Innovation: ENEA patents process to produce sugars from plants for food, drugs and biofuels

One simple, low-cost process to obtain soluble sugars from plants, such as glucose and fructose, which finds applications in the food, pharmaceutical and biofuel industry. Patented by the ENEA researchers at the Laboratory of Technologies and Processes for Biorefineries and Green Chemistry in the Trisaia Research Center, in the province of Matera, it consists in obtaining a solution of monomeric sugar from plants, particularly roots, placed in a container in which water is introduced, as compared to the systems currently in use, which require a sequence of treatments with different equipment.

Energy: Online ENEA guide on energy communities

The Energy Community, a vade mecum developed by ENEA in collaboration with the Agency for Energy and Sustainable Development of Modena (AESS) and the University of Bologna, is online. The guide describes energy communities as a tool for ecological transition and to contrast climate change, empowering citizens to interact with the energy market as “prosumers”, i.e. people who produce and consume their own renewable energy.

Energy: ENEA Quarterly Analysis, demand recovers (+1.5%) together with CO2 emissions (+0.2%)

Energy consumption started recovering in 2021 after the record drop in 2020 (-10%) caused by the Covid-19 pandemic: despite decreasing in January and February (-4% each), energy demand grew by 1.5% year-over-year in Q1 2021, thanks to a strong growth in March (+15%). A double-digit growth is now expected in the second quarter and by the end of 2021 about one third of consumption lost in 2020 will likely be recovered. These are some key findings of the latest issue of ENEA Quarterly Analysis of the Italian Energy System, which also highlights a substantial worsening of the ISPRED energy transition index (-18% in Q1 2021 Quarter-over-Quarter), which monitors decarbonisation, energy security, and energy prices and affordability.
