Innovation: An electronic nose for aircraft safety

An electronic nose that can detect flaws in bonded composite aircraft panels, which could compromise the solidity of the entire structure. This is what a multidisciplinary team from the ENEA Portici Research Center developed as part of the European project ComBoNDT (Quality assurance concepts for adhesive bonding of aircraft composite structures by extended non-destructive testing), funded by the European research program H2020 for the development of technologies for the safety of modern aircraft extensively using carbon fiber materials.

Energy: Italian cluster starts up with 72 partners, and 2 million euros for smart grids and concentrating solar power

ENEA presides over the Board of Directors made up of Eni, Enel, Terna, GE, CNR, RSE, EnSiEL, and the Lombardy Energy Cleantech Cluster. The “Energy” National Technology Cluster is starting up its operations. The Cluster brings together 72 business concerns, university and research players and local authorities.

Innovation: Livorno embraces smart city solutions to save energy and cut emissions

Smart LED street lights, remote-controlled traffic lights, sensors and cameras for traffic management and vehicle parking and environmental monitoring. These are some of the technologies implemented by ENEA in the smart urban renewal program of Livorno that will allow total energy savings up to 70%, in addition to a CO2 cut of over 1400 tons per year.

The "Sea and Coastal Observatory" Foundation has been set up in Naples with the participation of ENEA, CNR, INGV, the Dohrn Foundation, the Experimental Southern Zooprophylactic Institute (IZSM) and the Port System Authority as founding members, the Central Tyrrhenian Sea, the three Universities of Naples "Federico II", "L'Orientale" and "Parthenope” and ARPA Campania as institutional partner.

EU project for low cost advanced zero emission power generation from biomass

Developing biomass power plants to produce electricity with near-zero gas and PM emissions at less than 0,10 €/kW, with high energy efficiency (50% compared to the current 20%) at low investment and operating costs. This is the objective of the European project BLAZE, comprising 9 partners, including ENEA and the University Guglielmo Marconi as coordinator.

Waste and recycling: New guidelines for recovery of critical raw materials from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE)

About 45 tons of waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE ) were collected in Europe; 7 recovery processes (with adoption of 14 different methods) – these are just a few of the figures summing up the European project, “Critical Raw Material (CRM) Closed Loop Recovery”, dedicated to testing new techniques for recovery of critical materials from household WEEE.

Security: ONU office says the Italian EISAC emergency management centre is among the best worldwide

The first centre in Europe for safety of strategic infrastructures, EISAC.it, was founded in Italy through teamwork between ENEA and INGV. Agrifood: Reducing the environmental impact of the agri-food supply chain with Eu project PEFMED

Over 200 companies from six European countries involved in initiatives aiming at reducing the environmental footprint of six consumer goods (olive oil, wine, bottled water, animal feed, cured meats and cheese). Environment: ENEA at the International Symposium on Urban Mining and Waste Management in China

ENEA, the National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development, has been invited in China at SUMEast 2019, the International Symposium on Urban Mining and Waste Management. Antarctica: Census of penguins thanks to first Italian drones

For the first time in Antarctica drones operated by ENEA researchers flew over the Italian base "Mario Zucchelli" and the surrounding area to support the scientific activities of the last expedition, the 34th Summer Campaign of the National Antarctic Research Program (PNRA), funded by the MIUR and implemented by ENEA for logistics and by the CNR for scientific coordination.

An ENEA, CNA, Confapi, Confartigianato, Confindustria, Unioncamere initiative - A 2.5 million fund. Strengthening growth and competitiveness of Italian companies with tailor-made innovative solutions, the advice of dedicated researchers and cutting-edge infrastructures. Environment: ENEA enters EU Copernicus Programme for air quality forecasting

ENEA enters the EU Copernicus Programme for monitoring air pollution with the Modeling System MINNI, with the task of contributing to the forecasting of the composition of the atmosphere in Europe, collaborating with nine other models developed by European research institutes. The system MINNI[1] will develop maps of air concentration levels of particulates (PM10 and PM2.5) and gases (sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and ozone) and later of pollen (grass, birch, olive and ambrosia) and secondary components of PM2.5.

Environment: Here comes the "virtual gardener", designing green spaces

An innovative and easy-to-use tool for designing green areas with Italian flora species, identifying the most suitable ones with respect to the geographical area and the environmental characteristics. It's called Anthosart Green Tool and it’s the outcome of an homonym project coordinated by ENEA, targeted at reducing the costs of managing green areas and water consumption, as well as discovering possible alternative uses of plants in food and crafts and their links with art, literature, music and territory.

Cultural Heritage: Orvieto Cathedral, ENEA anti-seismic bases end a 120-year exile for Baroque statues

An evolution of the technology previously employed by ENEA for the Riace Bronzes. After a 120-year “exile” the Annunciation group , formed of two statues made in the early 600’s by Francesco Mochi, returns to the Orvieto Cathedral thanks to Opera del Duomo, the Superintendence of Archeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Umbria, the Higher Institute for Conservation and Restoration and ENEA, which has created two innovative anti-seismic bases to protect the statues, similar to what was done for the Riace Bronzes in the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria.

Energy: MEDENER, Giorgio Graditi (ENEA) new President

Giorgio Graditi (ENEA) has been elected President of MEDENER for the two-year period 2019-2020, with the unanimous vote of the general assembly of the association which comprises the agencies of the Mediterranean Countries engaged in the field of energy efficiency and renewable sources. Graditi, 50, Head of the ENEA Division "Solar thermal, Thermodynamic and Smart Network", succeeds Dario Chello, Head of the ENEA Office "European Union and International Organizations" in 2017-18.
