The terrible Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the strategic role of the agri-food chain and the need for it to be at the center of the economic and social agenda, both at the national and European level, as stated by the Minister of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies Teresa Bellanova and reported in a leading article in the latest issue of the magazine ENEA Energia Ambiente e Innovazione, 'Cultivating sustainability - The great challenges for agriculture and the transformation of agri-food systems', available on the ENEA website.

Environment: An "open data" green archive for sustainable urban green

Research offers new solutions for greener and more sustainable cities. Anthosart Green Tool, an open data tool developed by ENEA and Forum Plinianum onlus to learn about plants and design green areas, optimizing water consumption and costs while protecting biodiversity, has been indicated by the Ministry of the Environment for the Protection of the Territory and the Sea as a useful tool to facilitate an economic and sustainable management of public green spaces.

Innovation: ENEA and FOS patent field simulator to grow plants indoor

Microcosmo, the field simulator conceived and developed by ENEA and FOS SpA, has been allocated funding from the Autonomous Province of Bolzano for a feasibility study to be conducted at the "NOI Techpark" research center in the South Tyrolean capital. Research will develop artificial intelligence applications both in the agronomic and entomology fields. Microcosm makes it possible to grow some plants like olive, potato, tomato, lettuce and basil indoors and in extreme environments, using soil.

Smart working: ENEA releases first Italian survey on public administration

It's called “Smart Working Times. The PA among work-life balance, work enhancement and the environment " the first national survey on telework and smart working in the PA, conducted by ENEA. The investigation has regarded 29 public administrations which, even before the Coronavirus emergency, had activated and made accessible these new forms of remote work.

Energy: ENEA joins European project to train young researchers and technicians in the nuclear field

Training a new generation of young researchers and technicians in the nuclear field with a focus on innovation and safety is the goal of the European project ARIEL (Accelerator and Research reactor Infrastructures for Education and Learning), which will involve, for the next three years , 23 research bodies from 14 European countries, including ENEA for Italy.

Energy: COVID impact on consumption − March: -15% and record fall in CO2 emissions ISPRED Index -8%

The impact of COVID-19 on the national energy sector is reflected in consumption, prices and CO2 emissions data. These findings are reported in ENEA’s quarterly analysis of the Italian energy system, which highlights a 7% decrease vs 2019 in primary and final energy consumption during the first three months of the year, with a peak of -15% for the month of March alone. In addition, ENEA estimates a possible 20% fall for the second quarter of 2020, markedly in excess of 10% for the entire half year, both in primary and final consumption terms.

Coronavirus: PULVIRUS project to detect the link between pollution and COVID-19

The launch of PULVIRUS, a joint research project among ENEA, the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS) and the National System for Environmental Protection (SNPA, composed of ISPRA and the Regional Agencies of the National System for Environmental Protection) with the aim of providing institutions and citizens information, answers and indication on air pollution and COVID-19 based on scientific data, know-how and experience, was announced today.

Coronavirus: Manufacturing valves to turn snorkeling masks into ventilators

ENEA has been providing civil protection with medical devices that allow to turn snorkeling masks into ventilators for the Covid-19 emergency. At the Portici Center, researchers are using 3D printing to create the special valves patented by Isinnova Ltd, needed to adapt decathlon snoekeling masks “Easybreath” in ventilators for sub-intensive therapy.

Coronavirus: ENEA opens up access to its supercomputer to beat COVID-19

The research community engaged in tackling the coronavirus will be given free access to one of the most powerful supercomputers in Italy. CRESCO6, the infrastructure operating at the ENEA Portici Center, near Naples, can perform up to 1.4 million billion mathematical operations per second. The data of the 2nd National Report on the circular economy in Italy by ENEA and the CEN-Circular Economy Network were presented today. Bioeconomy increasingly important; greater efforts are needed to protect natural capital, particularly soil, and combat the climate crisis. Every inhabitant of the Earth uses more than 11,000 kilos of materials per year. A third quickly turns into waste and ends up mostly in landfills; only another third is still in use after just 12 months.
