Energy efficiency: Online new free software for residential building certification

ENEA, jointly with the Construction Technologies Institute of the CNR, has made available the new version of DOCET, a simplified software tool for the certification of existing residential buildings, targeted at technicians and operators of the building sector. The software, to be used for buildings up to 200 m2 without major renovations, can draft the energy performance certificate (APE), which assesses the energy efficiency and energy class of a building and includes recommandations on how to best improve the energy efficiency of the property.

Energy: Italy, declining prices and consumption on the rise in 2017

2017 registered rising final energy consumptions (+1.38% as compared to 2016, in line with the +1.5 % in GDP) and a slight decline in CO2 emissions (-0.5%) mostly thanks to sectors such as electricity generation (-5%) and transportation (-2.2%). New historical heights for renewables in total electric consumption: wind and solar reached a 70% peak per hour (17 april 2017) and the whole of RES (Renewable Energy Sources) an 87% peak. This is what emerges from the Quarterly Review of the Italian Energy System, edited by ENEA, which examines data in the fourth quarter of 2017 and makes an assessment of the entire year. The study also shows an increase in natural gas consumptions (+6%, after the 5% in 2016), an energy source which firmly led the mix with a 36.5% share, showing decreasing prices in all consumption groups and running counter to EU trends.

Energy: A new “oven” to study alternative solutions for fusion

ENEA has recently developed a high-temperature vacuum oven providing the necessary technological skills for manufacturing some components of the DTT (Divertor Tokamak Test facility), the new fusion research machine to be built in Frascati. It's a metal cylinder the size of a boiler that will be used to study the properties of the CPS (Capillary-Pore System), sponges soaked with liquid metal to be used in the divertor as material directly facing plasma. The surface of the liquid metal is not inherently subject to damage inside the tokamak and this represents a solution to the problem of deterioration of solid materials, lenghtening the life cycle of such a key component of the future reactor as the divertor.

Industry: "BasKer", the new fireproof material for transport and construction

"BasKer" (basalt+ceramic) is a new basalt fiber reinforced ceramic, used for exhaust pipes, heat shield, panels and fireproof doors for aerospace, military and sports applications. This material stands out for light weight, thermal insulation, high temperature and fire resistance. Security and sustainability complete the profile because it was obtained by exploiting industrial waste - low costs - thanks to production costs comparable to polymer composites - and efficiency - due to lighter vehicles, lower fuel consumption and environmental impact.
