Hydrogeological instability: Innovative model to predict risks of ‘rivers of mud’

A multidisciplinary team of ENEA researchers has developed an innovative methodology to predict the intensity and path of "rivers of mud", a type of landslide with particularly catastrophic effects, and identify areas and infrastructures at risk. The novelty of the methodology lies in an approach based on cross-checking geographical, historical and territorial data, as well as field studies conducted during the landslides of Messina and on risk mitigation tests conducted in Afghanistan (1) with World Bank funds.

Circular economy: Italian Antarctic base recycles waste too

A system that makes it possible to separate, classify and reuse waste, turning it from problem to resource and preserving the Antarctic ecosystem. It’s the circular economy model that ENEA has applied to the Italian "Mario Zucchelli" base in Antarctica, based on the separate collection of plastic, tetrapak, glass, cardboard, copper, steel and organic residues in order to minimize the use of incinerator.

Construction industry: Online survey to improve energy efficiency in buildings

At the start a survey targeted at the operators of the construction sector on the use of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) to improve the energy performance of buildings throughout their life cycle. BIM is a digital model of the physical and functional characteristics of a building during its entire life cycle, enabling experts and technicians to dialogue and share the various processes relating to construction, management, maintenance and demolition of buildings, reducing costs and 'the environmental impact.

Antarctica: A lab under the sea ice to study climate

A laboratory 25.5 meter below sea level in the icy Antarctic waters of the Ross Sea to study climate by analyzing the growth of calcium carbonate skeletons of coralline algae and marine invertebrates like bryozoans. This is the objective of the two-year project "Ice-ClimaLizers", coordinated by ENEA as part of the 34th Italian expedition to Antarctica, in collaboration with two CNR institutes (Marine Sciences of Bologna and Engineering of the Sea of Genoa), the Institute of Oceanology of Sopot (Poland), the University of Portsmouth and the Museum of Natural History of London (United Kingdom) and the University of Burgundy (France). Funded by the National Program for Research in Antarctica (PNRA), Ice-ClimaLizers (Antarctic biomineralizers as proxies of climate change) is the first Italian climate project focusing on the role of Antarctic biomineralizers as indicators of climate change and in particular of ocean acidification.

Innovation: Italian study opens up new perspectives for natural rubber production

An ENEA study, published in the international journal BMC Genomics, opens new perspectives for the production of natural rubber in Europe. Natural rubber, a raw material of particular technological and commercial importance, cannot be replaced with artificial rubber in many applications. In recent years, interest has grown for the identification and the study of new plant species capable of producing this material. Researchers from the Genomics team of the ENEA Trisaia Research Center have found interesting potentials in the Russian dandelion (Taraxacum kok-saghyz) as an alternative to the rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis), which cannot be grown at our latitudes and is greatly at risk due to phytopathological problems.

Environment: All-women research team designs first anti-flooding roundabout

ROTH₂O is the first roundabout improving urban traffic by avoiding sudden flooding from extreme weather events, thanks to an underground reservoir holding up to 70 cubic meters of water[1]. Designed by an all-female team, ROTH₂O won the 1st edition of Climathon-Rome, the marathon of ideas against climate change organized by ENEA and Roma Capitale. "We are closely following the work of these young researchers, supporting them in the design of each single part of the roundabout with a detailed analysis of the implementation costs. The objective is submitting the project to companies as soon as possible, and some companies in the building sector have already shown some interest", Gabriele Zanini, Head of the ENEA Division" Models and Technologies for the Reduction of Anthropic Impacts and Natural Hazards ", explained.
