Antarctica: Change of season with over 50 scientific projects completed

The PNRA-National Antarctic Research Program, with the logistic coordination by ENEA and the scientific coordination by the CNR, wraps up the 33rd summer expedition and opens the 14th winter campaign. The last team left the Italian Station “Mario Zucchelli” based in Terra Nova Bay while at the French-Italian Station Concordia a small winter-over crew will remain in complete isolation for the next eight months, running experiments on glaciology, chemistry and atmospheric physics, astrophysics, astronomy, geophysics and biomedicine.

SafeSchool 4.0, the app for smartphones and tablets which measures energy consumption and seismic vulnerability of school buildings -simply and at affordable costs - is freely downloadable from App Store and Google Play. Space: A proving ground for a potential future veg garden on Mars

The mission Amadee-18 has officially started in Oman, in the Arabian Peninsula, with a simulation of Mars landing and the beginning of the isolation phase. Until February 28, five “would-be astronauts”, will conduct experiments simulating the conditions of the Red Planet with the objective of testing tools and procedures for future space missions. Italy will feed the future crew members with fresh food supplied by a hyper-technological vegetable garden, developed by ENEA, ASI (Italian Space Agency) and the Milan University, as part of the project “HortExtreme”.

Big data: Software bot for critical infrastructure security

Security of core services such as transport, electricity and water passes also through big data analytics. This is the objective of Obserbot, a software which will make it possible by acquiring and processing digital information on the internet about the damage suffered by critical infrastructures, due to malfunction, natural events and terrorist attacks. Cultural heritage: Italian technology for the Triton Fountain’s restoration in Malta

ENEA is part of the all-Italian team which conducted the restoration of the Triton Fountain in Malta thanks to a collaboration agreement with the company De Feo Restauri in Rome. The synergy between a highly specialized private company and a public research body gave a hi-tech imprint to the restoration of the symbolic monument of the Maltese capital, initiating an effective technological transfer activity from the laboratory to the company.

Next 27th February, the MATS (Multipurpose Applications by Thermodynamic Solar) Plant Opening Ceremony will take place in Borg El Arab (Alexandria, Egypt). The event is the acme of the work carried out by a consortium gathering European and Egyptian partners under a co-funded EU FP7 project . Energy: Nine proposals submitted for setting up Italian hub on fusion research

The first phase of the path taken by ENEA with a call to host the Divertor Test Facility (DTT), the largest national fusion research hub foreseeing investments for 500 million euro and over 1500 operators, closed with the presentation of nine proposals.
